When should I replace my mattress?
Tips for Determining when to Replace Your Mattress
Mattresses are rather expensive and because of that many of us hang onto our old mattresses long after they provide the proper support for sleeping. Although it may seem like you are saving money by not replacing a worn out mattress, instead you are sacrificing a good night’s sleep which can leave you feeling groggy, tired, stiff and achy. Take a good look at your current mattress using the following tips to help you determine if the time is right to replace your mattress.
A general rule of thumb in the mattress industry is that mattresses should be replaced at least every 10 years. This is because over time and with a lot of use a mattress can become filled with allergens and dust mites which can make for a poor night’s sleep and cause additional health problems. However, if your mattress resides in a guest bedroom or if you don’t sleep on it every night it may not need replacing that frequently. If you do sleep on your mattress most nights and you have owned it for longer than 10 years it is probably due to be replaced.
Even if you have not owned your mattress for ten years it can still become worn out and stop offering the proper support. Thoroughly inspect your mattress for signs of damage such as rips, soft spots or protruding springs. Remove all the blankets and take a good look at your mattress to see if it sags or droops which can indicate that it has lost its support. If you spot any of these problems then you should consider replacing your mattress.
You also need to consider how comfortable your mattress is for sleeping on. If you are finding it hard to get a comfortable position to sleep in, if you can feel the springs in the mattress, or if your limbs are falling asleep while you lay on it you probably should consider replacing it with a newer model.
Many times when couples get together they use one or the other person’s mattress in their new home. If you are using a mattress that either you or your partner had when you were single and it is too cramped for a couple you should consider upgrading to a larger size so you both can get a good night’s sleep.
The most important deciding factor in whether or not it may be time to replace your mattress is how well you are sleeping. Even if your mattress looks OK and seems to be in decent shape, if you find yourself tossing and turning all night because you can’t get comfortable you may want to consider looking for a new mattress. There are many different styles of mattresses on the market today that weren’t available even a few years ago which can help you to get a better night’s sleep and wake up feeling ready to face the day. You spend one third of your life sleeping so you may as well make it as comfortable as possible.
